The conference will take place at the Karol Lipiński Academy of Music in Wrocław between 25th and 26th of May 2011. This year we would like to invite a representative of each music therapy centre to present one workshop about the field of music therapy which is the most developed in ones centre and one paper about its activity. It will give us a chance to share experience with various centers of music therapy in Poland and abroad. Performance as an Event and Experience. Part I: Education

The conference will take place between 7th and 8th of June 2010 in Biedermann Palace, on 1/5  Franciszkańska Street in Łódź, Poland, seat of  the Institute of the Theory of Literature, Theatre and Audio-Visual Arts of University of Łódź.

The conference belongs to a series of international encounters,  organized by Department of Drama and Theatre, Theatre and Therapy Association (in cooperation with Poleski Art Center and Center for Training Teachers and Practical Education in Łódź), devoted to education through theatre, with particular focus on the theatre of the disabled. The previous conferences and seminars (which were all international events) took place at the University of Łódź in 1995, 1996,1998,1999, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2008. The following conference will therefore be the tenth, anniversary meeting in the entire series of conferences. The Theatrology Department of the University of Łódź has initiated the research on the specific characteristics of the disabled theatre and its presence in contemporary culture. The Department is also an originator and co-organizer of International Biannual Theatre Meetings Therapy and Theatre. The Meetings have been taking place in Łódź since 1995 and approximately 200 artistic groups and many scholars, educators, therapist, pedagogues and  students from almost all European countries took part in this event.

The conference series Spektakl jako wydarzenie i doświadczenie (Performance as Event and Experience) will refer to research that had already been carried out before, but it will also undertake new issues that reach beyond the presentation of therapy techniques and additional methods, beyond the considerations regarding the aesthetic and therapeutic dimensions of the theatre. After fifteen years of experience and nine scientific conferences (particularly the conferences related to the concept of theatre for life”, created by professor Lech Śliwonik) we are convinced that while considering theatre of the disabled  it is essential to perceive its participants (both actors and spectators) as persons endowed with existence dignity, who fulfill through an exchange of information and emotions with others. This sort of presence of a human-actor and human-spectator enables to compare this theatre type to other theatre kinds. The theatre of the disabled is theatre variant intensifying the way that theatre influences. Hardships of creating human experience and personality development happen in contemporary culture also through theatre and theatricality. In a world filled with simulacrum the theatre becomes, paradoxically, a place of real presence. This phenomenon is particularly visible in the theatre of the disabled (intellectually, somatically, psychologically, socially), as well as in other, amateur and marginalised types of theatre(children and youth theatre, experimental  theatre, ecological theatre, etc),

The superior objective of the new conference cycle is to discuss contemporary theatre as a place which enables the spectator to go through a unique, internal experience, a place of creating and simulating a community, which is a process that has both artistic and existential meanings and outcomes. What interests us is a theatre performance as an event and as an experience. Therefore, the performance is not understood merely as a  complete artistic work (which can be subjected primarily to aesthetic criteria), or a therapy (which is valued according to its effectiveness in improving the patient’s condition), but, above all, as the place of a particular type of encounter and exchange.  An encounter which emphasises the sense of community and transgresses the pre-established conditions of “being a spectator/being an actor/being disabled”. At the same time, the theatrical event which makes this encounter possible is a realisation of “the order of presence”, not “the order of representation”.

During the first conference of the cycle, entitled Spektakl jako wydarzenie i doświadczenie. Część I: EDUKACJA (Spectacle as Event and Experience. Part I: Education) and the 9th International Biannual Theatre Meetings Therapy and Theatre , (Łódź, 7-9 June 2010), we shall focus on the following issues:

1/ What is the current meaning and field of reference of the concept of “theatre education”, especially when applied to culturally marginalized environments? What other artistic and organizational forms can it acquire?

2/ What are the functions and possibilities of exerting an “educational” influence on the spectator/co-participant in the performance, in the time when – according to Prof. Lech Śliwonik – “the culture of participation” has been replaced by “a culture of clients”?  [L. Sliwonik, Dlugi bieg, wysokie przeszkody, ,,Scena" 3 (59) 2009 autumn, pp. 12-15].

3/ How to shape the emotions and the sensibility of the viewer of educational activities, in an attractive way and without yielding towards pop-cultural simplifications, to acquire a competent partner in a theatrical event, who would also be ready to cooperate?

4/ How to make the theatre an attractive medium in the process of education, to creatively exchange the experiences of spectators and artists?

5/ How to reinforce, through theatre education activities, the expression of subjectivity, the independence of thinking and the sensation of freedom produced by the participation in the performance? How to transfer all these achievements towards the everyday life of amateur artists?

6/ How to develop and convey the capacities and values represented by the group of amateur artists  while creating a theatrical performance?

7/ How to include amateur artists (their creativity and type of perception), effectively and in a mutually profitable manner, in the works of professional artists and cultural institutions?

8/ Examples and projects of creative theatrical and quasi-theatrical activities in communities endangered with marginalization or suffering from lack of social acceptance.

9/Examples of workshops, exercises, educational projects that develop the capacities of existing through theatre, thinking through theatre, and theatrical expression as means of self-development, barter and a chance to participate in high culture.

10/ Examples of projects and educational activities (workshops, actions, games, exhibitions, competitions, clubs, conferences, etc), that trough confrontation with other people and a common theatrical analysis of the present time are able to stimulate the social, ethical and intellectual sensitivity of the participants.

*The conference will consist of plenary lectures and simultaneous thematical sessions.

*The lectures will be given in Polish or in English (an oral translation is provided).

*A number of lectures will be published in a new editorial series, following a revision by its editors.

of Defense to draft a request for funds for art therapy centers to be developed
in Africa, to meet the psychosocial needs of women and children traumatized by
violence. We want to initiate this project in order to 1) provide direct art
therapy services to those in critical need, and 2) use accepted instruments to
measure the impact of such services within the parameters of accepted
evidence-based research and best practice models.

International Biannual IX Theatre Meetings Therapy and Theatre

LODZ 7 – 9 JUNE 2010

Poleski Art Centre in Lodz, University of Lodz Theatre and Drama Department, Therapy and Theatre Association and Association Domains of Culture – organizers of International Biannual IX Theatre Meetings Therapy and Theatre – would kindly like to invite your theatre group and other persons you recommend to attend this unusual artistic event: the review of performances, the variety of art therapeutic and drama therapeutic workshops and also the scientific conference. We invite both theatre groups (to perform their plays) and the individuals (workshop leaders, lecturers and  observers).

International Theatre Meetings Therapy and Theatre means for us that it is the festival devoted to the idea of integration of disabled and non disabled people. The first edition was organized in 1995 and the second in 1996. Then we decided to organize these Theatre Meetings every two years. Our aim is to show that the theatre art of disabled actors is really interesting for different kinds of audience – this consisted of non disabled theatre lovers as well. Such a performance may be a good piece of art, although most often it is just the therapy through art – also very important and worth talking about.

The festival is not a competition. We present the performances of professionals and amateurs, the performances made by adults and children and integration groups.

We also organize exhibitions of fine art pieces of disabled artists and of the photographs documenting the theatre work of our guest theatre companies.

The festival is traditionally accompanied by the scientific conference. Each year the conferences and seminars gather representatives of many kinds of professions connected with the realization of the theatre performance prepared with the participation of disabled actors, but not only – directors, artists, group leaders, educators, teachers, lecturers of high schools, pedagogies, psychologists, journalists, theatre critics, culture managers and students.

This year we would also like to invite you to the International Scientific Conference Theatre As The Event And As The Experience. The conference this time will be held at the University of Lodz by Theatre and Drama Department and will be devoted to the education through theatre.

Theatre Meetings Therapy and Theatre exist already for 15 years. During this time performances of many European countries were shown: from the Netherlands, Belgium, Great Britain, Italy, France, Cyprus, Luxembourg, Germany, Norway, Czech Republic, Hungary, Russia and Poland.

International Biannual IX Theatre Meetings Therapy and Theatre is going to be forum for exchanging experiences. We hope that due to participation in the festival you will be inspired to your own new creative researches. Conference took part in November. 160 participnats with 7o papers, presentations, posters, workshops and art event came to Lódź to share their experience. Many passionate practitioners working with psychiatric, cardiology and oncology patients, children with special needs and form main stream education, deaf and blind people, unemployed and abused clients, and with different support and developmental groups showed their work.

During the conference representatives of  4 associations met – The Polish Association of Therapy through Arts, The Association of Polish Arts Therapists "Kajros", The Association of Polish Music Therapists, and The Polish DMT Association. The discussion and presentation of solutions took place.

The Polish Association of Therapy through Arts launched "Therapy through Arts" website, where in Polsih post conference discussion continue.

We are very proud to announce the opening of the “Arts Therapies” platform. “Arts Therapies” is an invitation to exchange ideas, opinions, reflections, projects and research in the area of arts therapies. Polish arts therapies have long and widespread roots in various other disciplines such as art, education, psychiatry and psychology but are still on early stages of development. The discipline is very vivid and its developing quickly: there are numerous of publications, conferences and courses on university level. The discipline raises great interest in professionals from many other practice areas. Although dynamic changes in Polish arts therapies, we still face the same problems: there is no registered arts therapist occupation, we do not have widely accepted standards for practice, nor education and the discussion about those subjects is restricted to small groups of professionals.

That is why we would like this platform to became a place of exchange for art-, music-, dance-, theatre- and creative writing therapist, as well as other professionals who believe that they should practice under the umbrela of the term “arts therapies”.

Lets start writing and  describing in detail what we do, lets share research evidence, lets show what is happening in arts therapies in Poland and around the world. With this experience, lets try to create modern and progressive  profession. Having a reach experience in using arts and creativity in healing process and many, many people with passion devoted to their work we will be able not only to establish independent occupation in Poland but also inspire and fascinate arts therapists form abroad.

We design “Arts Therapies” to consists of two parts: Academic Journal with peer reviewed articles and books reviews, and a social utility which enables discussion, ideas, information and news exchange, as well as give possibility to enrich journal with multimedia materials – images, movement and sound are the keys to our practice!

“Art Therapies” is mainly Polish portal and its aims are connected to the development of the profession in Poland, although we would love to connect with arts therapists form other countries to cooperate on our projects and programmes. We are aiming to publish foreign authors, write about foreign projects and events, so we invite you all to join us, share your experience and start discussion. So lets start creating the platform for cooparation!
