Konferencja jest kontynuacją Światowego Kongresu Naukowego Juliana Aleksandrowicza „WJASC 2008”, a równocześnie wpisuje się w obchody Roku Chopinowskiego.

Profesor Julian Aleksandrowicz, „Krakowianin XX wieku w dziedzinie nauki”, wprowadzając już w latach 60-tych ubiegłego stulecia, jako pierwszy muzykoterapię w leczeniu chorego somatycznie, zwracał uwagę na ogromne znaczenie muzyki w promowaniu zdrowia. The conference will be held in the delightful Italian town of Lucca. With its multitude of little piazzas, ancient churches and famous Roman amphitheatre, and still encircled by its medieval walls, Lucca is one of the most lovely towns in Tuscany.

As the guest of the Provincia di Lucca, the conference will be held in Real Collegio, situated within the ramparts. The old town is only one kilometre across and few cars are allowed along its narrow streets. Lucca is located between the cities of Florence and Pisa, both of which provide easy train and bus connections.

Intelligence is often associated with thought, cognition and the mind. The Cartesian revolution leant heavily on the faculty of thinking, celebrating reason and rationality. Perception and understanding of self and others have been investigated, developed and celebrated through these Apollonian qualities.

But what of the intelligence of feeling? What of the intelligence of intuition and sensation? What of a potential resurgence of Dionysian passion, participation and feeling as a counterbalance to the rationality of our technical age?

The conference revolves around questions which reverberate within and around the intelligence of feeling. What do we understand to be the function of feeling in consciousness? How do the arts facilitate feeling-based communication in the interpersonal realm? How are feelings understood as different from emotions? As therapists, how do we develop our sensibility to feelings whilst avoiding sentimentality?  As educators, how do we approach the pedagogy of this theme and in what ways can the intelligence of feeling and reflexivity influence practice and research?  Is one of the purposes of art to develop an aesthetic which gives form to feelings?

Research & Service Evaluation Workshop: Case Study Methods

Arts Therapists are increasingly asked to undertake service evaluation and research as part of their posts.

This workshop provides an introduction to the use of Yin’s (2009) approach to Case Study Methodology as an effective research and service evaluation tool for busy clinicians and clinical researchers. Research can be an activity that causes frustration for clinicians as the ‘language’ and methods of research can sometimes be difficult to grasp and can appear as interesting as attempting to mix water and oil. Through a lively interaction of theory, experiential exercises, group discussion and jargon-busting practical suggestions this workshop will provide participants with the skills needed to undertake a small scale project. Participants will learn the ‘nuts and bolts’ of Case Study Methodology including how to set up a project and collect information, analyse data, integrate findings with theory and prepare a written report.

Paul Camic is Reader in Clinical and Health Psychology, Research Director and Senior Consultant in the

Department of Applied Psychology at Canterbury Christ Church University’s Salomons Campus in Tunbridge Wells where he also coordinates the PhD programme in Psychology, Arts & Health. Paul has previously taught in the Art Therapy MA at the University of Illinois-Chicago and in the Dance-Movement Therapy MA at Columbia College Chicago. He also developed and lead the Creative and Expressive Arts speciality in the Clinical Psychology programme at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology. He is co-editor of Arts & Health: An International Journal for Research, Policy and Practice. He is a licensed clinical psychologist in the US and HPC registered in the UK.

This symposium will introduce different research methodologies that can be used by Arts Therapists: in the morning, Simon Hackett and Val Huet will present research projects that focus on forensic services for people with learning disabilities. Simon will talk about a mixed methodology single case studies and Val about thematic analysis in qualitative research. Madeline Andersen Warren, a Dramatherapist, will talk about using the Delphi Cycle as a research tool. Simon Bell will present an empirical, practice-based piece of research using an ethnographic approach and Service Users will talk  with Neil Springham about their involvement as researchers in ResearchNet. This day should help illuminate some useful research approaches and tools for Arts Therapists.

This presentation will focus on The Delphi Cycle as a relevant research tool for Arts Therapists. A brief history of the development of Delphi will be followed by an examination of the roles of the researcher and participants and how the presenter is using this tool for her doctoral research into Dramatherapy and text based interventions.

This is an empirical, practice-based piece of research using an ethnographic approach. Simon’s thesis describes and analyses nine illustrated case studies of patients with a terminal illness and their experience of art therapy.

14.30 ResearchNet: Neil Springham and Oxleas Service Users/Researchers.

It is vital that we understand the patient experience. It is clear that service users respond much better to others who have used the services. However, whilst service user research has been growing in recent years, arguably more needs to be done to improve the representation of samples and levels of involvement of service users in the whole process.

This presentation will show ResearchNet as a model being developed by Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust which combines volunteer to work recovery process with service user research. Research activity involves many transferable skills and can really equip people for the workplace. The experience of being in a role brings many benefits to the individual. The presentation will be delivered by members of ResearchNet who will outline the consortium of partners involved and describe their experiences of being members.

Polecamy trening organizowany przez Brytyjskie Stowarzyszenie Arteterapeutów (BAAT), prowadzony przez Carly Raby, psychoterapeutkę, specjalistkę w zakresie pracy z dziećmi z doświadczeniami traumatycznymi.

CATT (Children’s Accelerated Trauma Treatment) to metoda pracy oparta o ekspresje artystyczną, której skuteczność potwierdziły liczne badania. Dwudniowy trening pokaże zasady stosowania CATT i przygotuje osoby już pracujące z dziećmi do stosowania tej metody.

What is CATT?

CATT (Children’s Accelerated Children’s Trauma Treatment) is a new technique for treating trauma and PTSD, based on a merging of arts/ play based methods  and an adaptation of the ‘rewind technique’ to suit children and young people of all ages and to assist them in the recovery of  PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) symptoms, flashbacks, nightmares and anxiety.

CATT was designed by Carly Raby in 2003 and developed in partnership with children and young people, to ensure that it was both effective and comfortable for them. Between 2005 and 2007, this training spread across the UK and included services such as the Police, Special Schools, specialist projects, Social Services and national charities. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, as were the results of people using it to help children who had been affected by traumatic experiences.

Based on the success of the technique, in 2008, Carly was invited to Rwanda to train NGO staff and local community leaders in CATT, to ensure that they could effectively treat children and young people suffering from PTSD symptoms as a result of the genocide. Again, the technique was successful in its treatment of people suffering from PTSD symptoms and Carly was invited back again in 2009 to train at the National Trauma Centre in Rwanda (ARCT). Rigorous independent research is currently being undertaken to investigate the effectiveness of this innovative technique and there have been two publications this year (one in South Africa, and one in the UK) in relation to its success.

What Will I Gain from Coming on the Course?

• The ability to de-traumatise children and young people quickly, and in a way that feels comfortable and even fun for them
• An understanding of trauma/ the brain, and  why PTSD symptoms occur in children and young people
• A clear understanding of PTSD signs and symptoms in children and young people
• An understanding of current best practice in the treatment of PTSD in children and young people
• An opportunity to practice in a safe and supported environment
• Confidence, upon leaving, to treat CYP using the CATT technique
• Creative ways of engaging with children and young people who have experienced trauma

Who Should Attend?

Children and young people who have been traumatised say they want support from people they know, trust and see regularly. This may include foster parents, parents, school counsellors, people with specialist support roles in schools and outreach staff on specialist projects. These are the people that children regularly receive support from, and these people are welcome to attend. This course should also appeal to CAMHS staff (Tiers 1-4), arts therapists, and  people with specialist roles working with children and young people with mental health difficulties / or in situations where they are in close contact with children and young people who may have been traumatised (Social Services, NGO’s, refuges, referral units, domestic violence projects etc.). Carly Raby (BA, MEd. Dip. Psychotherapy) Carly is a qualified psychotherapist and children’s rights specialist. She has run services for children who have been permanently excluded from school, and held national posts for NGO’s in the UK (Young Minds, Mental Health Foundation and Anna Freud/ EBPU) championing the rights of children and young people with mental health difficulties and enabling them to have a voice in relation services designed to improve their emotional well-being.
